Description
Techno-Thrash French group Voight Kampff proudly present their second album Substance Rêve (Dream Substance). With 10 brand new tracks, this record is extending the exploration of Phillip K. Dick’s universe and reflections started on the More Human Than Human album.
Though Voight Kampff’s Techno-Thrash roots are still in evidence, the songs on Substance Rêve are more diverse, progressive, spanning a wider spectrum of emotions and influences from bands like Enslaved, Death, Voivod, Cynic and even King Crimson can clearly be heard throughout the record.
The lyrics focus on such diverse themes as artificial intelligence, creator and creature relationships, mind control, Promethean rebellion, while the music alternates between ambient, ethereal parts and sonic aggression, but always with a melodic feel to it. The album is closes on an epic brotherly/parricide duet between vocalist Ramon and special guest St Rodolphe, lead singer of the iconic French doomsters Barabbas.
The artwork features two illustrations specially drawn for Voight Kampff by legendary french Sci-Fi illustrator and comic book artist Philippe Caza, inspired by two of the album songs.
Substance Rêve lifts the veil on a retro avant-garde universe, where past and future meet and blend at the crossroads of this century’s hopes and fears. A sonic journey through space and time!

In a way this reminds me of early Destruction around “Infernal Overkill” and “Eternal Devastation”, but with less intensity. Though in some second wave Bay Area thrash too and you get a pretty good picture of where this is heading. A cool technical thrash metal album …read more

You might feel inclined to criticise Voight Kampff of not being accessible enough. And it is true, you have to listen repeated times to Substance Rêve before it really starts to stick with you. But you might also declare that as a hidden quality, because who wants to listen to a record that reveals all of its secrets at its first run-through …read more
